Back to School Prayers

by Emily Vanden Heuvel

This time of year always feels like a big pivot in my home. I'm married to a teacher, and we have one child in high school and another in college. In this season, we shift from the laid-back pace of summer break to early mornings and strict routines of the school year. My husband is putting the finishing touches on his classroom and updating his curriculum, while my kids are enjoying the last days of freedom before the academic demands return. For both teachers and students, there is an interesting mix of anticipation, hope, anxiety, and stress that defines this season. One of the best ways my family copes with the chaos of this big transition is to pray.

A Back-to-School Prayer

As the new school year gets underway, we come to you with thankful hearts. I pray for everyone involved: school leaders, teachers, students, parents, grandparents, bus drivers, and all those who support our schools.

Give school administrators wisdom and courage. Help them love what they do and the people they serve. Guide their decisions and help them lead with humility and kindness, just like Jesus did.

For teachers, we ask for creativity, patience, and compassion. Give them energy for the busy days ahead and the perseverance to face the ups and downs. Help them create classrooms where kids feel safe, curious, and cared for. Bless their relationships with students, families, and coworkers.

Bring courage and peace to students, especially those feeling nervous or uncertain. Help them want to learn and be open to new things. And for students who face extra challenges, especially those who need extra support, surround them with people and places where they feel accepted, safe, and understood.

We pray for everyone traveling to and from school. Give them strength, kindness, and grace as they navigate the year. When things get overwhelming, remind them that you are there, leading and guiding. We trust you to go before them and keep them safe. May all who enter the school building have an abundance of peace, purpose, and hope.
