Does God Listen to My Prayers?
by Christopher Hunt
If you’ve wondered if God hears your prayers, you are not alone. In fact, many biblical characters struggled with doubts about God’s presence and whether their prayers were being heard. David, said to be a man after God’s own heart, cried out in anguish: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest” (Psalm 22:1-2). Jesus would echo this lament from the Cross. Naomi felt abandoned by God; when her relatives greeted her, she answered, “Don’t call me Naomi…Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter” (Ruth 1:20). Perhaps one of the most famous Christians in modern times, Mother Teresa, confessed in a letter: “In my soul I feel just that terrible pain of loss—of God not wanting me—of God not being God—of God not really existing” (Kerry Walters, “Mother Teresa”). Even a woman who had devoted her life to God and to serving his people wondered if he heard her… or even existed.
Does God hear your prayers? Yes, he does. God heard David, blessed him, forgave his most grievous sins, and promised a Messiah would ascend to David’s throne forever. God was also working in Naomi's life, even when she felt forgotten. Through her daughter-in-law Ruth, God was putting together a plan that would lead to King David and later to Jesus. Even though sometimes she could not feel God near her, those who knew Teresa saw Jesus in her.
