Why Should I Pray?

by Jordan An

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.

Have you ever struggled with knowing what to say when praying, questioned whether God is really listening, or felt like prayer doesn’t change anything? It’s easy to push prayer aside when life gets busy or treat prayer like a last resort when things go wrong. So why should we pray?

Prayer is more than a ritual before a meal or a list of wishes; it’s a vital part of our relationship with God. Here are six powerful reasons why we pray:

1. Prayer deepens your relationship with God

Like any relationship, our connection with God grows when we communicate with him. After all, prayer is more than just speaking–it’s also listening. The more you pray and listen, the more you will recognize God’s voice in your life and trust him to guide you.

2. Prayer strengthens your faith

A consistent prayer life helps us grow spiritually and strengthens our faith. When you bring your joys, struggles, and questions to God regularly, you develop a greater dependence on him. Prayer also helps show us the desires of our hearts and teaches us to re-align those desires with God’s will.

3. Prayer brings peace and comfort

When life overwhelms us, prayer offers a place of refuge. The apostle Paul urged that we should “not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6-7). Even when our circumstances don’t change immediately, prayer reassures us that God has not left us alone with our troubles.

4. Prayer provides wisdom and guidance

Do you find yourself faced with tough decisions, uncertainties, or challenges? Prayer is one of the most important and powerful ways we seek God’s direction. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5). Turning to prayer in difficult times allows us to slow down and attune ourselves to God’s wisdom.

5. Prayer cultivates gratitude

Prayer isn’t just about asking God for things, it’s also about thanking him for who he is and all he has already done for us. Expressing gratitude through prayer shifts our focus from what we lack to the blessings God already provided to us. Worshipping and praising God through prayer in difficult seasons gives us a greater perspective and sense of peace that he is bigger than our circumstances.

6. Prayer builds community

Praying for others is one of the greatest gifts we can offer. Praying with others in a small group, church setting, or even online can strengthen our collective faith and bring encouragement to the body of Christ. Jesus emphasized the power of collective prayer, declaring “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20).

Why should we pray? Prayer isn’t about perfect words or rituals; it’s about drawing closer to God and listening to his voice. So whether you’re seeking guidance, comfort, or a deeper relationship with God, prayer is an essential part of experiencing his presence more fully in your life.
